This nationally-recognised qualification is designed for people who work either full or part time in providing care to individuals. To gain this qualification you must provide evidence to show that you meet the required standards and must complete four units as a compulsory part of the full qualification, plus two optional units. The optional units allow you to choose the two which best reflect your job role.
NTS will provide you with a qualified assessor to support you throughout the process of working towards completing this qualification.
This NVQ designed for all those working in a health or social care setting, whether full or part time, permanent or temporary, day or night workers. It is relevant to those supporting adults of any age, in any setting.
NVQ Level 2
Mandatory units (A):
- Communicate with, and complete records for, individuals
- Support the health and safety of yourself and individuals
- Develop your knowledge and practice
- Ensure your own actions support the care, protection and wellbeing of individuals
Optional units (B):
- Help individuals to eat and drink
- Help individuals to keep mobile
- Help address the physical comfort needs of individuals
- Undertake agreed pressure area care
- Support individuals with their personal care needs
- Support individuals to manage continence
- Maintain the feet of individuals who have been assessed as requiring help with general foot care
- Assist in the administration of medication
- Support individuals prior to, during and after clinical procedures
- Contribute to moving and handling individuals
- Observe, monitor and record the conditions of individuals
- Support individuals to undertake and monitor their own health care
- Support individuals who are distressed
- Contribute to working in collaboration with carers in the caring role
- Contribute to affective group care
- Gain access to/ ensure individuals’ homes are secure
- Manage environments and resources during clinical activities
- Protect yourself from the risk of violence at work
- Carry out and provide feedback on specific plan of care activities
- Support individuals to access and use information
- Support individuals in their daily living
- Support individuals to make journeys
- Support individuals to meet their domestic and personal needs
- Support individuals to access and participate in recreational activities

- Monitor, handle and maintain materials and equipment
- Manage and organize time and activities to support individuals in the community
- Receive and monitor visitors
- Maintain a safe and clean environment
- Relate to, and interact with, individuals
- Ensure your own actions support the equality, diversity, rights and responsibilities of individuals
- Enable individuals to negotiate specific environments
- Receive, and store medicines and products
- Obtain and test capillary blood samples
Candidates in the social care setting must be assessed in the four core units in ‘A’, plus two optional units in ‘B’.
Those in the health care sector may undertake the four units in ‘A’ and two optional units in ‘B’ , or two ‘A’ units and two ‘B’ units, plus two other units from either A or B, or three ‘A’ units and three ‘B’ units.
C units are for continual professional development only and do not form part of the qualification structure.
This qualification will support progression in to specialist employment areas such as:
- Drugs/alcohol and mental health work
- Youth justice and rehabilitation work
- Management and social work

NVQ Level 2
This nationally-recognised qualification is designed to support the development of people working in a supportive role in health care, such as cleaners, cooks, porters and receptionists. To gain this qualification you must prove your competence in your job role and in your assessment show that you meet the required standards. The award consists of four units as a compulsory part of the full qualification and four optional units. The optional units allow you to choose the two which best reflect your job role.
NTS will provide you with a qualified assessor who will carry out assessments with you at your workplace and support you throughout the process of working towards completing this qualification.

- Administer patients appointments
- Record, store and supply information using paper based filing systems
- Enter, retrieve and print data in a database
- Provide authorised access to records
- Protect records
- Maintain the arrangements of records
- Administer the current record system
- Support and control visitors to service and facilities
- Transport supplies of physical resources within the work area
- Receive, transmit, store and retrieve information
- Support the use of information technology
- Minimise and deal with aggressive and abusive behaviour
- Organise the receipt and storage of goods
- Control and monitor access to premises and property
- Drive passenger carrying vehicles safely
- Move and transport patients within the work area
- Collect, transport and dispose of health care waste

In order to achieve an Apprenticeship, Key Skills (Communication Level 2 and Application of Level 1) and a Technical Certificate (GOAL Certificate in Support Serviced Level 2) are required to be added to this NVQ.
