The training in Year 10 steered by the workbooks is 75% practical in nature. The students often having no prior knowledge of the setting, equipment or workshop-based jobs start with the basics. This includes handling tools correctly.

For students not familiar with success, the achievements possible in the short term are very motivational and confidence-building.

The ten (approx) tasks that the students follow in their workbooks are designed to build up the skills to a level that allows them to achieve the final task, which in mechanics is service.

Each task will ordinarily be carried out three times and then signed off. The level of achievement at this stage will be at the required standard to enable them to begin their Year 11 NVQ training.
