NTS offers the opportunity for schools across the county to send Year 10 and 11 students for work-related learning as part of their curriculum. The visits are weekly for half or full days involving practical and written tasks. Year 10 students follow an in-house workbook and cover basic skills. Year 11 students work to NVQ criteria, carrying out assessments and completing a portfolio. The training offers the opportunity to those with a genuine interest in the subject to gain relevant knowledge and experience first-hand of how it relates to the field of work.
Students with potentially low academic achievement or with vocational interests are given the chance to gain a qualification that will assist them into further training or employment on leaving school.
At the start of the programme we carry out inductions. Students will have a health and safety presentation and a brief talk on equal opportunities. We will complete any outstanding paperwork at this stage. The students will be issued with their PPE (overalls and steel-capped boots) either as purchased or lent to them by NTS. A guided tour of the site will be carried out and they will be introduced to their tutor, who will carry out further health and safety as appropriate to their workshop.
At the start of Year 11 the students will have an induction in which they will be assigned and meet their assessor for the year ahead. They will be given their NVQ portfolio and be familiarised with the layout. What is expected in order to achieve the qualification will be explained. Health and safety will be discussed in more detail.
