Qual Ref: 100/5530/7 (FF)

This qualification covers activities within the motor industry that relate to fast-fit technicians working on a wide range of vehicles in garages, dealerships and fast-fit businesses.

NVQ Level 1

This covers the basic technical needs for today’s motor industry and covers:

  • Understanding of how the above vehicle systems work

Other skills that may be required are:

  • Identifying faulty components: engines, gearboxes, axles, batteries, alternators and starter motors
  • Repairing tyres and carrying out tyre related adjustments
  • Valeting vehicles

NVQ Level 2

This covers more technical needs for today’s motor industry. There are seven units in total – three mandatory and four optional:

Mandatory units:

  • Contribute to workplace good housekeeping
  • Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
  • Maintain positive working relationships

Optional units (choose four):

  • Inspect, repair and replace high performance light vehicle tyres
  • Inspect, repair and replace motorcycle tyres
  • Carry out light vehicle front wheel alignment
  • Inspect and replace light vehicle clutches
  • Inspect and replace light vehicle exhaust components
  • Inspect, test and replace vehicle batteries and related components

In order to achieve an Apprenticeship, Key Skills (Communication Level 1, Application of Level 1 and Information Technology Level 1) and a Technical Certificate (Certificate in Vehicle Fitting Level 2 or the Progression Award in Automotive Servicing and Repair Level 2) are required to be added to this NVQ.

This qualification is very flexible in its structure, enabling the organisation and individual to choose the optional units which best suit their work and job role. Although all units need to be achieved to gain the NVQ, each unit is a ‘mini qualification’ and can be separately accredited.
