Driver training

Let us put you in the driving seat

We provide driving tuition for individuals and companies for all types of vehicles.
All of our experienced instructors are fully qualified and approved by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and are committed to the learner achieving a high standard of driving skills. We pride ourselves on our high pass rates.

All our modern, premium training vehicles have been selected to make the learner’s training experience as comfortable and enjoyable as possible and we provide assistance, information, advice and guidance for the learner in applying for their licences, and for taking the required theory and practical tests.

NTS offers the following driving courses:
  • Car (category B)
  • Car and trailer/caravan (categories B and E)
  • Goods vehicles (categories C1, C and C and E)
  • Passenger-carrying vehicles (categories D1 and D)
  • Fleet driver training (all categories)
  • Economic and defensive driver training (all categories)
Cars are classed as motor vehicles not exceeding 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass weight and not having more than eight passenger seats. This licence will also permit the driver to tow certain weight trailers. A category B licence is required for drivers of these vehicles who must be a minimum of 17 years of age.
A Category B+E licence and another driving test pass are necessary for drivers who wish to tow trailers or caravans of a certain weight. This licence is required when the towing vehicle, which must not exceed the 3,500 kg weight, is towing a trailer or caravan which exceeds the 750kg MAM weight limit. NTS are an approved training centre for The Caravan Club and provides regular training for their manoeuvring, motor caravan and practical caravanning courses.

Goods vehicles over 3.5t and up to 7.5t are classed as medium-sized goods vehicles and are included in the licence category C1. The minimum age limit for driving these vehicles is normally 18 years of age.
All rigid goods vehicles over 7.5t are included in licence Category C. The minimum age limit for driving these vehicles is 18 years of age. You must pass Category C (rigid vehicles) driving test before you can apply for the Category C+E (articulated and lorry/trailer combinations) provisional licence. The driving tests are conducted by DSA driving examiners at a dedicated test centre.
You must undertake a medical examination with form D4 (doctors will make a charge for this service) before applying to the DVLA Swansea with a provisional licence application (form D2). Both forms are available at Post Offices or we can send them to you.
All of our training vehicles meet the required DSA minimum test vehicle standards and are typical of the modern vehicles used in the industry.

There are currently two categories of driving licences for passenger carrying vehicles.
Category D1 entitles drivers to drive vehicles with between nine and 16 passenger seats (minibuses). The minimum age limit to drive these vehicles is 18 years of age. Category D entitles drivers to drive any size of passenger carrying vehicle (bus). If any of these vehicles are used for towing a trailer over 750kg, the driver must then have a Category D1+E or D+E licence.
The process of obtaining a provisional Category D1 or D licence starts by completion of a licence application form (D2) and a medical form (D4) which is completed by a GP (following a health and fitness assessment) and they may make a charge for this. Both forms are available at Post Offices or we can send them to you.
