Driver CPC

Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) has been introduced across the European Union to maintain high driving standards and improve road safety. All professional bus, coach and lorry drivers must hold a Driver CPC if they want to drive for a living. The requirement for bus and coach drivers to hold a CPC was introduced on 10 September 2008 and takes effect for lorry drivers from 10 September 2009.

New drivers, from the above dates, will need to pass the Initial Driver CPC theory and practical tests in addition to the licence acquisition theory and practical tests in order to drive professionally. Once these tests have been passed, drivers will need to undergo ongoing Periodic Training to keep their Driver CPC qualification.

Drivers who already hold vocational driving licences on 10th September 2008 for bus and coach and on 10th September 2009 for lorries will receive their driver CPC through acquired or ‘grandfather’ rights and this will be valid for 5 years. However, at the end of the 5 years, they will need to have undergone 35 hours of Periodic Training in order to retain their qualification for the following 5 years.

Drivers Hours and Working Time Regulations

Please Note: Attendance at courses is a legal requirement of the occupation and we as training providers must make drivers and their employers aware of the requirements of the drivers’hours regulations if courses are undertaken at weekends or on other drivers rest days. Time spent attending a course will probably affect the amount of driving or other work they may undertake under the drivers hours and working time regulations.
